ISTANBUL (DIHA) - 10.282 women were under attack in four months of 2010 according to the Istanbul Governnorship. The statistics released in panel titled “Sharing Experiments against Domestic Violence.
Lawyer Vildan Yirmibesoglu, president of the Istanbul Governorship Human Rights Unit, released the statistics about domestic violence collected from Istanbul Police Department. According to the data of governorship, there were 10.282 women under attack in Turkey first four months of 2010.
Here are the other statistics about domestic violence explained by Yirmibesoglu: The number of women under attack is 10.775 in 2007, 14.858 in 2008 and 22.764 in 2009.
Rights violations of women is being considered as legitimate because of traditions and customs, according to lawyer Yirmibesoglu; “Domestic violence needs to be not only prevented but remove from all families’ lives. Offenders have to be found and punished. The punishment also must be dissuasive due to get away from domestic violence. Under age marriages is one of reason for not having conscious about their own rights. Even though there are some written laws on these cases, implementations are not enough.”
Lawyer Aydeniz Alisbah Tuskan, chair of Istanbul Bar Association Women Rights Centre, emphasized the reality of unconsciousness among women related domestic violence in ghettos: “Women in ghettos do not know what they are going to do or where they are going to go when they faced domestic violence. We are trying to construct knowledge about this point.”
On the other hand, Rene Renic, who came from the USA made a speech about women rights violation in the USA; “One out of four women is facing domestic violence in the United States of America. Even worse pregnancy is not the reason for men to not beat women. Some of deaths occur because of being beaten in pregnancy term. 15 percent of the domestic violence occurs in gay families. 2500 Women shelters in 56 provinces are not enough for women’s neediness.”
