NEWSCENTRE (DIHA) According to allegation, a fire opened from a military base killed 16 year-old Canan Saldık who was around with her family for picnic in Kurubas Village in Van. Another bullet hit the windows of one of houses in the village. Death of Canan caused tensions in the city.
In recent years dozens of children lost their lives around the military basis close to the civil settlements. While in 2009 Ceylan Önköl lost her life because of explosive fired from the military base in Lice district of Diyarbakir, Olcan Akyürek died in blast near to the Garisson in Ozalp district of Van. A couple weeks ago another child in Idil district of Sirnak herding his sheep lost his life unexploded ordnance.
Rest of Sirnak is again ‘security zone’
Following Turkish General Staff’s declaration for some areas in Siirt, Hakkari and Sirnak as 'Military Security Zones', now new part of Şirnak were also announced as ‘security zone’.
According to the website of the Turkish General Staff, Incebel Mountains in Beytussebap district of Sirnak have been declared as a security zone for the period of 25 July- 25 September 2010.
During this period, the areas will be closed to any civilians, including journalists.
Incebel Mountains and its northern outskirts, Hakkâri-Cukurca, Caglayan and Pirincceken were previously closed from April 24 to May 14.
Armed attack against environmentalists in Artvin
Environmentalists, who were against hydroelectric tribune (HES) in Artvin, were attacked by stuff of hydro electric tribune construction. Attacked environmentalists, members of Brothers of Rivers Platform, will make denouncement against attackers. The Platform members have been working on against new HES constructions on the area for years.
Smuggler killed by police
It was alleged that, cigarette smuggler 28 year-old Engin Urak was killed by police’ butt strokes after being caught in Yüksekova district of Hakkari. Eye witnesses said that police brought Urak near the Bridge and threw him to river after killing him.
