MERSİN (DİHA) - Production of Ceki named basket which is used in carrying fruits, and source of livelihood for low income families in Mersin, is to be banned by regulations enacted in the context of accordance with EU. Families who make living on ceki say that ' what people do if they are left unemployed. Should we do theft'.
Reeds collected from bricks of stream in many villages mainly in Akdibek village connected to Mersin's Tarsus District, are transformed to 'ceki' named baskets after 11 operations. One unit of ceki is being sold from 7-8 YTL (5-5.5dollar). Families who make living on selling ceki have trouble because of regulation of food packing enacted in accordance with European Union which makes it compulsory to use plastic packing in selling and purchasing of vegetable and fruit. Families who are deprived from their only means of livelihood say that '' what this many people will do if left unemployed. Should we do theft? We don't want to do theft. We only want to do our job.''
